Lockhead wheel grease seals

A question from Mr I Bentley of Sale, Cheshire:

Does anyone know where to get some Lockhead wheel bearing grease seals?

Any part numbers or suppliers details would be very useful.

Rubery Owen, the Port/Ans axle makers, used these odd-looking seals for improved water-resistance, as these axles were also used on boat-launching trailers. For our use, conventional seals will be OK if correct dimensionally. You should measure the diameter of the hub bore, the available depth of the bore both to the bearing's outer race edge & also the depth from the bore end to the inner race face. Finally of course you need the diameter of the shoulder or collar on the stub axle. You must make certain that the chosen seal doesn't foul the bearing's inner race when assembled on the stub axle, as this may prevent the bearing seating against the axle collar. This could cause the hub to work loose when running. If in doubt, seek advice from a trailer specialist.

A specialist bearing supplier should be able to sort out a suitable seal given these measurements. Ideally, you would take the hub to the supplier & let them measure the depths for you.
