Making new cushions

Post by txfsealord » Sat, 19 Apr 2008, 1:20 pm

Hi, all you soft-furnishing experts out there, a question for you! I've bought at great expense, a complete set of new foams & at even greater expense, a large roll of "Overboat" marine acrylic to cover them.

I'm finding the foam to be 'sticky', the fabric won't slide over it at all. Quite apart from the struggle to assemble the foam into the covers, I'm afraid they'll go out of shape constantly if the foam can't move about inside. should I "lubricate" it? Dust with French chalk/ fit a nylon liner? Or is there another way?

Advice please!

Hi Steve,
I've just had a chat with my wife about your problem with 'sticky' foam, and what she has recommended is to firstly cover the bare foam with a thin cotton stockinette sleeve ( available cheaply from any fabric or upholstery shop). This will form a middle layer, which will prevent any adhesion from the foam base, to whichever covering material you choose.
Also, if you need to ever remove the foam former from the cover, the stockinette will make it a simple task e.g:- cleaning etc.
Hope this helps.
So many repairs, so little time!

Sticky Foam

Hi Rob, many thanks to you & your wife for that advice!

As feared, the cushions look rather secondhand now, after a fair amount of use. Once we've reached the end of this season's vanning I'll unpick 'em & do as she suggests.
