13" wheels?

Post by Hotrodder » Tue, 08 Jul 2008, 2:47 pm

My portafold has 13" steel wheels for some reason. Were any built with them or were 10" wheels used for all of them? If so, why did someone change them I wonder.

As far as I know they all had 10" wheels. But then again, with Portafolds I've learnt 'never say never'.

Post by bakers-bar » Tue, 02 Dec 2008, 7:55 pm

Just been checking the tyres on the Portafold we have just bought and it also has 13" wheels. Does anyone know where i can get a spare?

Thanks

13" rims

Post by txfsealord » Mon, 08 Dec 2008, 7:21 pm

The most likely suspect would be the Austin A35 or A40; this rim has the same stud-pitch as the 10" Mini rim & is offset slightly more to the outside. It takes a 5.20-13 crossply or 145-13 radial.

You may also use the early Austin-Healey Sprite/ Midget mk. 1 rim. The later Rostyle type has a smaller centre hole which may not clear your hub, depending on which hub you have. Tyre sizes & offset as above.

Hope this helps,

Steve Lord

97.4% Sure I've seen a Portafold on 13" wheels too, they were the 3½" A35/Reliant Regal ones. Would the 4" Sprite ones fit on there without being too far offset?
That van belonged (and may still belong) to an Orcadian chap, a member of the Thistle Branch of the ROC, who stays on the mainland now, just outside Aberdeen.

Hello all,

Just spotted the thread re 13" wheels, is there enough clearance for that size of wheel and if so what are they off?

My 10" wheels have the number 21A881 stamped in them does anyone know if they are the original wheels or not????

Fraser.

You could compensate by fitting low profile tyres.

13" were fitted to many cars e.g. the A40 (Farina).

I think I need to link a couple of threads together. Try these as well:

Wheels again

Post by txfsealord » Wed, 03 Jun 2009, 6:21 pm

Hi Fraser,

Your 21A881 wheels aren't the original ones, that's a later Mini rim with reduced offset. I've tried it on mine & I found the tyre sidewall rubs on the stub axle end. If using a 10" Mini rim, a better one is 21A2744 which looks identical but, sneakily, has slightly more offset - it clears the axle, anyway.

As your van has 10" rims, there won't be sufficient clearance for 13" ones, unless you remove the axle & add spacers above it.

Hello Steve,

Thanks for the info, I thought my wheels were original as they do not appear to foul anything on the suspension and accept the original hubcaps without any problems.

I am now at a loss, what do you think would be the best wheels for me to get as it will be difficult to get original or mini wheels up here?

Regards, Fraser.
