Hi guys!
Having recently stumbled upon a Portafold for sale could anyone tell me what common faults to look out for? Particularly serious/expensive ones. I was reading on here about 'encapsulated' ply in the floor failing....don't like the sound of that. Are there any simple (girly here lol) tests I can do to check it's ok. I'm pretty handy (converted the back of my Spinter van a couple of years ago) but can't afford to be sorting major problems....so pointers please on structural, mechanical etc.
Also, when standing in 'van, should one be able to see daylight over top, rear corner or is this an indication that shell has twisted?

There isn't really any major issues with Portafolds, there's nothing that can't be fixed really. The hinges would be a point to look at but like I said, they can be fixed with new pins, new hinges completely or the fibre-glass can be repaired if they've been ripped out.

Obviously the part that takes the most battering is the corners of the roof where it twists when being put up and down. Again, nothing that can't be fixed though. Basically, find a good boat repairer who is prepared to do bits for you and you'll be fine. If you can get one that just needs a bit of TLC and and clean up, maybe some new furnishings that's the best avenue.

The chassis is very basic, and I run mine to my local mechanic once a year just to put up on the ramps, grease everything, check the bearings, brakes etc. Very rare that these need welding, it's just the hubs, brakes etc to keep an eye on.

There are air gaps in each corner of the roof, these are for removing any condensation so it stays dry and not too damp. Also, if you're cooking they're good for removing cooking smells and fumes from the burning gas.
