Hinge Pins Doors

Post by Gordon McLaren » Sat, 12 Apr 2008, 6:13 am

Anybody out their had problems with door hinge pins? well i did and the solution was easy. the hinges have a countersunk headed pin , with a brass ball and spring in the middle , and a locking tab and nut on the bottom. these looked vaguely familiar , and i found their the same as Land Rover series 2a door hinge pins . e bay to the rescue and they were fitted in under 1/2 an hour. doors now very smooth , no floating up and down when opening at all.
i have a spare set if anybody wants them , cost price + carriage

cheers gordon

Hi Guys,

Gordon, I took your lead and got some off of Ebay.

I haven't actually looked at how they dismantle and go back on......

Is it easy?

hinge pins doors fitting

Post by Gordon McLaren » Tue, 24 Jun 2008, 6:03 pm

very easy to remove old ones , 1- take thin bladed screwdriver or chisel , tap up folded down locktab , 2-hold pin from moving with screwdriver on top slot (scrape paint from groove first) , and with other hand use spanner or adjustable to remove nut . if nuts are rusted on use angle grinder to cut of the nut , covering fibreglass behind with thin piece of board to protect from sparks . 3- once nuts are off , the springs will fall down from the bottom part of the hinges. remove pins by lifting door upward and off , this reveals the brass ball sitting between the 2 halves.

replace the 2 new brass balls ,put door back on and drop down pins from top , spring comes over thread from bottom , compressed by lock tab and nut. tighten nuts , gently compressing springs , and adjust to suit , finish off by tapping over locktabs. you may find about 1/2 inch of thread sticking down , cut off or leave , whichever.

i replaced all four sets for both doors in approx 1/2 hour. it makes a big difference , their is no floating up and down and i find the doors shut considerably better. :D cheers gordon

Gordon
You make it sound very easy! I will give it a go..........

At the moment, both halves of the door catch each oher and a previous owner has not been too careful, causing a bit of damage.

Hopefully, this will help to keep the two halves "apart"

Cheers
Graham
