Replacement hub and drum

Post by corvette73uk » Mon, 27 Mar 2017, 1:14 pm

Dear Portafolders,

One of my Portafold's Rubery Owen hubs is damaged on the outer bearing side.

Please can anyone confirm a suitable replacement that wouldn't require any modifications? The brakes are fine and I'd like to refit the existing drum and parts. It's just the hub I need to replace with the bearings.

Many thanks,

Daniel

Forgive me as I'm not very mechanically minded.

Could I use one of these

or something of a better quality. Obviously the Portafold is braked but the hub looks similar or would a classic mini hub be better ?

Thanks again
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

The Rubery Owen axle has hubs and bearings which are much larger and stronger than those found on modern axles carrying this brake-size, either trailers or cars. This makes it difficult to find a direct replacement type of hub. Could your damaged hub be repaired? If so, this would be your best approach. If it can't be repaired, take it to a trailer or caravan specialist which has full workshop facilities and see if they can match a modern hub of the right stud-PCD with suitable bearing-sizes for the RO stub axle. A Morris Minor 7" slip-over brake-drum could then be used to match your brake; this can be found at specialist Minor parts stockists. The problem with this approach is the RO's nicely tapered stub axle - most modern trailer stub axles are parallel ie inner and outer bearings are the same size. The Towsure hub you linked falls in this category, its bore would be too short and too small diameter for the inner RO bearing. You might just 'get lucky' and find someone on here who has replaced the RO axle-unit with Indespension units and therefore can sell you a genuine RO hub/drum casting; I suggest asking Matt to advertise on your behalf for one. A specialist caravan breaker's may have one. Old caravans can moulder away for years in people's back gardens, kept as play-houses for the grand-kids and so on; caravan breakers sometimes have gear of great age and rarity.

Sorry I can't offer an easy answer. Let us know how you get on, and feel free to ask any further questions you may have.
