I really don't want to spoil the historic appeal of Matilda by putting a yellow plate on her, does anyone know if we can legally get away with a historic black and white one? Bear in mind that at the moment the car I tow with is not historic....hysterical maybe.....

Fraid not, the plate on the back of the Portafold has to match the one on the car and if your car was manufactured (not registered) on or after the 1st of January 1973 then it has to have reflective plates on it.

I have seen illegal cars running around on silver and black plates. One that springs to mind is a 535 BMW from the mid 90's and because he'd put a personalised plate on it with 3 numbers and 3 letters he thought he could get away with the old style colours as well. The only car I think you could get away with it on without getting pulled by the fuzz would be a Morgan. You'd have to take off the high level brake light and the rear head rests (four seater only) but you could pass it off to general on-lookers as a 1960's/70's car with a private plate on it. Of course, come MOT time, it would all have to be put back to modern plates.

Back to the Portafold: You should also have the 'towed vehicle' reflective triangles fitted and then there's the optional '60' (or the period '50') sticker, to show that that's your maximum speed as you're towing. Although I doubt anyone would know what that meant anyway.

Of course you could have it removable and when you're at a show replace it with a silver on black plate with just PORTAFOLD on it.
